Van raided for mobile telephones on A405 near Bricket Wood

At about 1pm on Thursday, 16 February 2006, thieves car-jacked a white Transit van on the A405, North Orbital Road near St Albans, and stole more than £54,000 worth of mobile phones from the back.

A delivery man from Stevenage was driving the van along the A405 near the M25, junction 21a.

A silver Audi convertible pulled in front of him, causing him to crash into the back of the car.

Two men jumped out of the Audi.

One of the men used a hammer to smash the van driver's side window, while the second man told the him to get down.

He was forced into the passenger seat and had to sit with his head in the footwell.

The robbers drove the van to Noke Lane and bundled the driver into the back, before stealing the 200 Samsung D600 mobile phones. They are worth about £270 each.

It is not clear how the thieves escaped, but it is believed they drove off towards the A405.

The car jacking and the smashing of the driver's van window would have attracted a lot of attention, as the A405 junction with the M25 would have been very busy at lunchtime.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

It is believed that there were more than two offenders involved.

If you are offered a cheap Samsung phone, it could be one of those that were stolen, so you contact police.
