Non-emergency contact number launched

Plans for a national non-emergency number are still being discussed, but Hertfordshire Constabulary have decided to go ahead with its own local number to help improve the way it handles incoming calls.

Anyone wishing to speak to the police in a non-emergency situation can now call Hertfordshire Constabulary on: 0845 33 00 222.

The single contact number is charged at local rate, and can be used to reach any Hertfordshire police station, department, unit, or member of police staff.

This new number will make it much easier for people to contact the police without the frustration experienced by people trying to find an alternative to 999 for non-emergencies. The 999 service should only be used for genuine emergencies.

The number provides a simple way to contact police in Hertfordshire when your call is not urgent but you need help or advice.

There are currently 26 different police station numbers reaching one central switchboard, as well as hundreds of direct dial numbers.

The current numbers can still be used, but the new number provides a single point of contact at a local rate, regardless of where the call is made.
