Due to the increase of Mobile telephones thefts there is now a national database which is used to prevent stolen handsets being used on UK networks. This will reduce their value to thieves, although batteries and other parts can be used.

Your mobile telephone uses a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card which carries information such as your PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) telephone number(s), PIN (Personal Identity Number) codes, phone book entries, text messages, etc. The SIM also has its own unique serial number printed on it.

All mobile handsets have an IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) code, which is its serial number by which it can be identified. It can be found on a label (normally under the battery) on the rear of the handset. You can find the electronic version by keying *#06# (with or without a SIM card installed).

If your phone is stolen, you can report the SIM card, IMEI, or PSTN number to your network provider who will enter the information into their database, thus preventing its use in the UK. Unfortunately this will not prevent use on networks in other countries.
