Halil, a lad from Bricket Wood, had an accident as a baby which left him brain damaged. Even though he could not walk or talk he still had a delightful personality.
A group of friends supported his mother, Aysel, and helped the family by giving Halil daily exercises.
Halil attended a special school, but he and his family still required an enormous amount of support, both financially and in many other ways.
Very little help was available from Social Services and other official organisations; even from those who are supposed to be specifically geared for helping the disabled.
Halil required a new buggy and a standing frame costing several thousands of pounds. Official organisations claimed that they were unable to afford these and said that they must be privately funded.
Another problem that the family faced was that their befriender family who looked after Halil one night each week and one weekend a month, had other commitments, and therefore alternative help needed to be found.
